CGCars.net
The CGCars.net mission statement:
So what is this website all about?
I am Onno van Braam, creator of this website, and the idea of it is to gather a great collection of 3D/2D art concerning Cars.
The main reason is to inspire other people when making their own 3D/2D cars, when modeling or drawing them. I, as a 3D modeler, have always found that the best inspiration comes from seeing other people's work, seeing those beautiful models, renders, work in progresses.
Seeing the famous Audi TT by Thomas Suurland for instance drove me into trying harder and working harder at learning 3D Studio Max: I wanted to become as good as him. Whether I succeeded, I will leave to other people to judge, but what I am trying to say is: it tends to take a spark to get people going. And with this website I will hope to get as many sparks going as possible: the world if 3D'ing is a great one if you ask me, and the satisfaction of rendering out your own models and seeing that it has become as good as you wanted it to be, is huge.
Another reason is that I have a couple of passions in my life: cars, 3D modeling and building websites. Being able to combine the three is a win-win-win scenario for me and has been great fun; all the way. I am not claiming it is perfect, but I did the best I could and I am always open to suggestions in improving it.
Having a portal for 3D artists to show off their work and get free publicity is another thing I want to achieve; I think good 3D artists should get a lot of respect and publicity, whether it be in 3D world alone, or outside of it too. Good art should get out in the open for a lot of people to appreciate. By gathering a lot of art on a single subject, it makes it easier for people to find it, to find art on a specific subject, seeing everything from total rubbish to brilliant renders.
Making people get involved or started into 3D modeling, because of seeing other people's creations/art would please me greatly. Since I know how it works, and have been in the 3D world for a while now (since 2000) personally as well as professionally, I think I am able to get this thing of the ground. Everybody who loves cars would also love Computer Generated Car images: see spectacular designs, or perfects rebuilds of existing cars.
I know there are and have been websites like this before, www.3dcar-gallery.com, but that hasn't been updated since 2003 and I therefore think that there is something missing: I think people want a website like this, or at least would enjoy a grand collection of 3D Cars on a single website.
So the idea was to create an option for everyone to make their work public in one spot.
I thought it would work, but it has been very quiet as can be seen from the statistics too; there isn't much progress or growth to be detected.
